The lineup of science speakers for Bluedot festival announced, with talks ranging from climate change to deep space exploration.
We’re not going to lie, we had a great time at Bluedot festival last year, and it wasn’t just listening to the likes of Jean-Michel Jarre and Underworld that tickled us, the impressive science progamme of speakers from around the world was also equally as impressive.
This year’s lineup is a veritable who’s who from the world STEM (and might we also add BBC Focusmagazine alumni) who will be discussing everything from space travel to spider silk. So while you’re not grooving to the likes of Orbital and Pixies, you can listen to the luminaries below at the acclaimed Dot talks, or get yout hands dirty with the interactive experiences in the Star Field and Planet Field.
Andrew Siemion, director of the Breakthrough Listen project, discusses the hunt for extraterrestrial intelligence with Mike Garrett, the new Sir Bernard Lovell Chair of Astrophysics at The University of Manchester. Chris Lintott, presenter of the BBC’s Sky at Night celebrates the 10th anniversary of Galaxy Zoo, while fellow Sky at Night expert Pete Lawrence anticipates this summer's solar eclipse. Vinita Marwaha Madill talks about her work designing space suits for ESA, and Monica Grady will review the achievements of Voyager, the furthest man-made object in the Universe, which itself will have a special “top secret” homage paid to it.
While Dallas Campbell explores how we’ll leave Earth, back on solid ground BBC Focuscolumnist Helen Czerski celebrates the world’s oceans, the Met Office’s Richard Betts poses questions about climate change, and professor David Nutt airs his views on the Psychoactive Substances Act.
The list goes on, and you can see the full line up of speakers and bands, as well as pick up weekend tickets (£149), at discoverthebluedot.com.
